Tarnish is a natural surface reaction that can make sterling silver look darker or duller. It does not necessarily mean the jewellery is poor quality. With a few simple habits, you can slow tarnish and keep your pieces looking their best.

Understand what causes tarnish

Silver can react with sulphur-containing compounds in the air. Humidity, perspiration, cosmetics, perfume, household cleaners and some materials used in storage can also affect how quickly a piece changes. Different environments and finishes mean tarnish rates vary.

Put jewellery on last

Apply perfume, hairspray, moisturiser and makeup before putting on jewellery. Let products dry before wearing silver. This reduces direct contact with residues that may dull the surface or affect delicate finishes.

Remove silver for water and activity

Take jewellery off before swimming, showering, exercising, cleaning or gardening. Chlorine and household chemicals can damage silver and some gemstones. Sweat and moisture left on a piece can also contribute to residue and tarnish.

Wipe after wearing

Use a clean, soft, dry cloth to gently remove fingerprints, oils and moisture. Do not scrub. For pieces with stones, pearls or oxidised details, follow the maker’s specific care instructions.

Store each piece separately

Keep silver in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and bathroom humidity. A soft pouch or closed jewellery box helps limit exposure and prevents pieces rubbing against one another. Anti-tarnish strips designed for jewellery storage may also help when used as directed.

Avoid unsuitable cleaning products

Do not use bleach, chlorine, abrasive powders or toothpaste. These can scratch or damage the surface. Use a silver polishing cloth for plain sterling silver when needed, and ask a jeweller about pieces with gemstones, plating, enamel or intentional patina.

Check clasps and settings

Care is not only about shine. Inspect clasps, links and stone settings occasionally. If a component becomes loose or a chain starts to kink, stop wearing it until it can be checked.

Make care a simple routine

Wipe, dry and store your jewellery after wearing. These small steps can make a real difference over time. If your piece already has tarnish, see our guide to cleaning sterling silver at home.
